Need to know
In Vietnam, com is eaten at the main meals of the day (lunch and
dinner). Rice is eaten together with a variety of different dishes and
is made from different kinds of rice.
Except for flying, transport is slow. See local info for details.
According to the legend, this custom was popularized during the Hung
Vuong Era, and closely follows the famous fairy tale of the "Story of
the Betel and Areca Nut". A quid of betel consists of four materials:
an areca leaf (sweet taste), betel bark (hot taste), a chay root
(bitter taste), and hydrated lime (pungent taste).
In Vietnam, little is what it appears to be on the surface. The
country’s religion is an excellent example. Ostensibly, Vietnam is a
Buddhist country – around 80% of the population regard themselves as
adherents. Pagodas are everywhere, and the Buddhist festivals are
embedded in the calendar. Also evident are temples with large effigies
of obviously non-Buddhist deities and historical figures, Christian
churches and signs of other religious sects.
The currency of Vietnam is "Dong" (abbreviated "d" or VND). Bank
notes are: 100d , 200d and 500d (too small value - rarely used);
1,000d; 2,000d; 5,000d; 10,000d, 20,000d, 50,000d and 100,000d (each
has two versions - cotton and polymer), 200,000d and 500,000d. Coins
have recently come into circulation but not widely been accepted due to
inconvenience, including: 200d; 500d; 1,000d; 2,000d and 5,000d.
